Beltrami County offers to accept late tax payments without penalty for small businesses

The Beltrami County Board, in their regular meeting Tuesday, opted to table proceeding with tax forfeitures.

Commissioners discussed the hardship that has been brought about with COVID-19 on many citizens, and the timing of proceeding with forfeitures amid a pandemic. They plan to come up with a resolution to discuss the topic at their next meeting.

The county will also accept late tax payments without penalty for businesses affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

County Auditor-Treasurer JoDee Treat says businesses, who have been deemed non-essential and owe less than $200,000, will be able to apply.

County Administrator Kay Mack says the county will be able to afford to operate despite the delayed payments, as they are already receiving many tax payments and escrow payments across the county.

The first half of property taxes are due May 15.
