Filing period closed, primaries in store for local seats

The filing period for local office has closed, and there will be primaries for several local elections this August.

Primaries will be held for council and board seats that have more than two candidates that have filed, since all candidates in these races run non-partisan. The filing period closed at 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 2.

Candidates FOR BEMIDJI CITY COUNCIL

Ward 1: Joe Gould, Audrey Thayer, Laura Fairbanks, Adam Hellquist and Ryan Enger

Ward 2 special election: Jaime Thibodeaux and Josh Peterson

Ward 3: Incumbent Ron Johnson, Paul Wiese and Greg Kuhn

Ward 5: Incumbent Nancy Erickson, Don Heinonen and Ernest Joseph Oppegaard-Peltier

Mayor: Michael Meehlhause, Jorge Prince, Robert Elliot, Ivan Smith, Mark Thorson and John Henningsgaard

CANDIDATES FOR BELTRAMI COUNTY BOARD

District 2: Incumbent Reed Olson and Joe Vene

District 4: Incumbent Tim Sumner and Danny Anderson

District 5: Incumbent Jim Lucachick, Christian Taylor-Johnson and Mike Bredon

CANDIDATES FOR MINNESOTA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

House 2A: Incumbent Matthew Grossell (R-Clearbrook) and  DFL-challenger Jeremiah Liend from Turtle River.

House 2B: Incumbent Republican Steve Green and DFL-challenger David Suby.

House 5A: Incumbent John Persell (DFL-Bemidji) and Republican challenger Matt Bliss of Pennington.

House 5B: Republican Spencer Igo and DFLer Joe Abeyta. Incumbent Republican Sandy Layman did not file.

CANDIDATES FOR MINNESOTA SENATE

District 2: Incumbent Paul Utke (R-Park Rapids) and DFL challenger Leonard Alan Roy of White Earth.

District 5: Incumbent Justin Eichorn (R-Grand Rapids), DFL challenger Rita Albrecht of Bemidji, Grassroots-Legalize Cannabis candidate Dennis Barsness of Bovey and Legal Marijuana Now candidate Robyn Smith of Longville.
