UPDATED: Missing person’s body found in Mississippi River

Cass County Sheriff Tom Burch reports a missing person’s body was found in rural Deer River.

According to a release, deputies received the missing person report Wednesday, June 17, and learned 41-year-old Melvin Rivera of Deer River went missing at the Schoolcraft State Park on the Mississippi River.

“On June 18, additional searching was completed, including searching the Mississippi River. At approximately 2:47 PM, a body of an adult male was recovered from the river,” said Burch in the release.

An autopsy is pending with the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office, and the identity of the victim was released Tuesday, June 23.

The Itasca County Sheriff’s Office, Leech Lake Tribal Police Department, Minnesota DNR and the Lakes Area Dive Team assisted with the search.
