Situation Update for Friday, July 24

The Minnesota Department of Health reported 773 newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 today and five newly reported deaths, bringing the state’s cumulative total to 49,488 cases and 1,566 deaths.

Of those deaths, 1,199 were residents of long-term care or assisted living facilities. Of those positive cases, 5,833 were health care workers.

Approximately 922,876 tests have been completed since March, and over 16,000 were completed July 23.

To date, 42,882 COVID patients have been released from isolation.

There have been 4,852 COVID-related hospitalizations so far, and today, 278 are hospitalized with 108 in the ICU.

Younger people still appear to be the largest cohort of COVID positive patients, with today’s graph showing 11,697 20-29 year olds positive for COVID-19.

Only one new case was reported in north-central Minnesota today, in Itasca County, bringing their cumulative total to 114 with 12 deaths.

Beltrami County has had 122 cases, Cass County has had 35 with two deaths, Clearwater County has had 14 cases, Hubbard County has had 13, Koochiching County has had 49 with three deaths, Lake of the Woods has had zero cases, Mahnomen County has had 17 cases and one death, and Roseau County has had 34 cases.

Itasca County Public Health Kelly Chandler reports that 50 new cases of COVID were confirmed since the beginning of July, with seven new cases confirmed this week. Medical facilities in the county have completed over 5,400 tests, but not only for people who reside in Itasca County.

“Thanks to earlier detection and a strong response by our local caregiving community, we remain at no additional deaths beyond our initial 12, despite the rise in cases,” said  Chandler.

“Still, we have some very sick friends and neighbors because of COVID.  Without a vaccine, our weapon against this virus is vigilance.  It will take every resident and visitor doing their part to get our economy, schools and our Itasca quality of life back on track.”
