The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded $9 million in Healthy Homes Production grants to twelve tribal agencies to protect children and families from home health and safety standards, including $750,000 to the White Earth Nation.
“As a pediatric neurosurgeon I have seen firsthand the negative impacts health hazards in the home have had on our nation’s youth,” said Secretary Ben Carson. “Today’s announcement gets us closer to achieving our goal of providing safe and healthy housing for all Americans.”
The focus of this round of grants, according to a release, is to address factors such as lead paint, indoor air quality and ventilation, heating devices and moisture damage.
“We at HUD understand the importance of the intersection between health and housing and are deeply committed to protecting Tribal communities, children and families across Minnesota so they can reach their full potential,” said HUD Midwest Regional Administrator Joseph P. Galvan.
