Bemidji man killed in hunting accident

A Bemidji man was killed in what appears to be a hunting accident near the Red Lake reservation boundary last Wednesday.

According to a release from Beltrami County Sheriff Ernie Beitel, 28-year-old Lukas Dudley was shot by another hunter, 33-year-old Rain Stately of Redby.

Stately and Dudley were reportedly not hunting together on the 29,000 block of Irvine Ave. NW near Puposky.

Stately said he saw movement and fired one round from his rifle around dusk, thinking he saw a deer.

When Stately found Dudley, he immediately called 911 and is cooperating with the investigation.

Dudley was not wearing the typical blaze orange or high visibility clothing required while hunting.

His body was transported to the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.

The Red Lake Tribal Police Department, Minnesota DNR and the FBI are assisting with the investigation.
