A re-employment study from Minnesota DEED shows that a large share of the state’s unemployment insurance claimers were recalled to the job they had before the pandemic hit the state last year, but they didn’t always stay.
Fifty-nine percent of Minnesotans who filed a UI claim in March 2020 were recalled by their former employer later that summer, but 33 percent of that worker group were laid off again between October and December.
Twenty-one percent of the UI claimers last March did not return to work that summer, and most of that group continued to collect UI throughout the fourth quarter.
The study suggests that this group workers is most at risk of prolonged unemployment, with 20 percent of this group in the leisure and hospitality sector.
