The Minnesota Legislature passed what it has called the biggest increase to e-12 education in the last 15 years, and Superintendent Tim Lutz says while the district is thankful for the increases, in the big picture, the district is still heading into financial trouble.
The 2 percent per-pupil funding formula was increased, and Lutz said that accounts for about 60 percent of the district’s revenue.
Lutz said the legislature increased funding for special education, but there was no funding increase for transportation, an area in which Bemidji Area Schools continue to find shortfalls.
While a new budget forecast has not yet been prepared by district staff, Lutz anticipates the district will go forth with an operating referendum request within the next couple of years.
The district is holding a special school board meeting next week, on Wednesday, July 14, for a referendum discussion.
