Author Pat Nelson visits the History Center on July 28 & 29 for a special in-person author talk about her book “Open Window: The Lake Julia TB Sanatorium, a Community Created by Tuberculosis”.
Pat was born in Bemidji, Minnesota. As a young child, she lived with her family on the dairy farm of the Lake Julia Tuberculosis Sanatorium at Puposky. She left Minnesota for Washington at age five but visited years later to gather information for this book (and is visiting again to further her research!)
On her trips to Minnesota, she visited the old sanatorium and became intrigued with its history and its connection to her own family. Nelson interviewed former patients; past employees; and the family of Dr. Mary Ghostley. She also searched for information at state and local history centers. Her relentless research resulted in a book that is of interest to those who like to read about the history of disease and health care; genealogists who would like to learn more about family members who suffered from tuberculosis; and especially to those who share a family connection to former employees, patients, or neighbors of the Lake Julia TB Sanatorium.
AmericanBookFest.com named Open Window a Best Book Awards Finalist in its biography category.
Books will be available for purchase & signing. Guests are welcome to bring San stories and photos to share.
