Public hearing on police advisory committee tonight

The Bemidji City Council will hold a public hearing on creating a police advisory committee this evening.

A police advisory committee has been at least a year in the making, and this is now the second reading of an ordinance to create it.

According to draft documents presented in previous council meetings, the committee will bring city leaders, including the police chief, and members of the community together for collaboration on initiatives to improve community relations.

Due to state law, union contracts, and the city’s charter and personnel policies, the committee will not be privy to complaints against specific officers, nor criminal or civil litigation.
