COVID updates for Wednesday, Aug. 25

The Minnesota Department of Health reported 1,404 new COVID-19 cases and seven new deaths today.

Of those cases, 17 were Beltrami County residents, 22 were in Cass County, and six were in Hubbard County.

Local health officials were monitoring 140 active COVID-19 cases within Beltrami County as of Tuesday.

Public Health Director Megan Heuer also said there were six county residents hospitalized for COVID-19, with two more hospitalized locally from out-of-county.

The CDC updated its masking recommendations to wear masks in crowded outdoor settings regardless of vaccination status.

Masking indoors is also recommended in places of high COVID transmission, which includes nearly all of the state.

Gov. Tim Walz announced a new vaccine incentive program for those who get their first vaccines at the Minnesota State Fair.

Minnesotans will be able to walk in or make an appointment for a free vaccine at the North End Event Center and walk away with a $100 Visa gift card.

“If you’ve waited to get your shot, there’s never been a better opportunity: You can walk away with a $100 Visa gift card in hand if you get your first COVID-19 dose at the State Fair,” said Walz.

“We continue to be committed to meeting Minnesotans where they are and making it as convenient as possible to get a shot, including right at the Great Minnesota Get-Together. If you’re going to the State Fair and still need your first dose, just swing by the North End Event Center, get your shot, and get $100.”
