Beltrami County, Leech Lake to hold joint meeting

The Beltrami County Board of Commissioners will hold what is likely the first joint meeting with the Leech Lake Tribal Council Tuesday.

The meetings will begin at 1 p.m. at Ten Lakes Town Hall, with the board’s meetings to follow at the same location. On the joint meeting agenda, each governmental unit will discuss their respective histories and government structures, followed by some possible cooperation topics.

The Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe has a bill moving through the legislature that would give the tribal police department concurrent jurisdiction on the reservation.

Other topics the two bodies may discuss are roadway improvements, the housing crisis and social services.

The county board, in their regular meetings, will also hear updates on the jail project, the upcoming redistricting process and work force trends.
