Bemidji City Council to review 2021 budget in work session

The Bemidji City Council will discuss last year’s financial review in their work session Monday.

According to the presentation prepared by Finance Director Ron Eischens, the city once again has an undesignated surplus.

The city originally had a budgeted surplus of $109,000 for 2021, and after two budget modifications, it was expected to be a $134,000 budgeted deficit in the general fund.

The actual result was a $51,000 surplus, which is $185,000 better than the budget.

Combined with the 2020 surplus, the general fund now has an undesignated surplus of $728,000.

Some of the surplus is due in part to COVID relief funds.

Eischens says among the city’s financial concerns is staffing, which will need to be addressed for the next year’s budget process.
