Pursuit turns fatal after subject ran into Battle River

The Red Lake Police Department says a 38-year-old Ponemah man was found dead Tuesday afternoon in the Battle River.

According to an announcement, Red Lake officials began a search of the Battle River last night after Delwyn Lee Cloud, Sr., fled from police officers, ran into the river and disappeared from sight.

A search continued until after midnight using a remote operating vehicle. The search resumed this morning and Mr. Cloud was found just before 1 p.m.

An autopsy is pending and the case is still under investigation.

Red Lake’s request for mutual aid was met by Red Lake Conservation, Leech Lake Tribal Police Department, Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office, Bemidji Fire Department, Red Lake Fire Department, Ponemah Fire Department, Minnesota Conservation, Red Lake Forestry, Border Patrol, FBI, Red Lake EMS, Ponemah EMS and many community volunteers.
