Sheriff warns about the dangers of early ice

The Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office is warning eager ice anglers about the dangers of early ice.

According to a release, at least eleven people were rescued from Upper Red Lake last week after they were stranded on ice after it separated from shore.

Early cold weather caused the lake to ice over earlier than usual, and social media accounts indicated that the ice was safe, when it wasn’t, according to the release.

Ice is never 100 percent safe, and it is absolutely unsafe this early in the winter fishing season.
