Bemidji City Council votes unanimously on displaying three tribal flags in City Hall

The Bemidji City Council voted unanimously on three resolutions supporting the display of the Red Lake, Leech Lake and White Earth tribal flags at City Hall. Mayor Jorge Prince noted the unanimous vote.

Council member Audrey Thayer said the motions mean more than flags.

A flag-raising ceremony in the City Hall lobby is scheduled for Dec. 19 at 5 p.m.

In other businesses, the council held its truth in taxation hearings.

Valuations of properties increased across the city, with the total property value in Bemidji increasing by 24 percent.

The council also approved the 2023 street renewal project’s feasibility study that delays construction on 11th street, prioritizing work on Mississippi Ave. from 5th to 12th street.

Property owners will not be assessed for this work, as the road had a 15-year assessment for work completed in the early 2000s.

The work on Mississippi will narrow the street, replace sewer and water mains, include sidewalks on both sides of the street, and add calendar parking.
