Arrowhead fires prompt air quality alerts

An air quality alert is in effect through 8:00 this evening for a good swath of Minnesota, largely resulting from fires in the state’s Arrowhead region, as well as some of the Quetico fire in Ontario.

Smokey haze descended on the area yesterday afternoon.

The air quality alert extends nearly as far west as Bemidji.

Firefighters battling the nearly 26,000-acre Greenwood Fire got little relief from yesterday’s rain, but made some progress in pushing back the blaze.

Hundreds of evacuations have already taken place, with nearly 500 personnel working on the fire.

The Superior National Forest Service says 12 primary structures and 57 outbuildings were destroyed Monday, and they say the fire continues to threaten cabins, homes and recreational sites.
