AUDIO: Senator Tina Smith discusses American Rescue Plan

Minnesotans will soon be receiving $1,400 stimulus checks after Wednesday’s US House passage of the $1.9 trillion COVID relief package.

No Republicans in Congress voted for the so-called American Rescue Plan.

Freshman G-O-P Representative Michelle Fischbach said, “Democrats left Republicans completely out of the discussion, opting to negotiate among themselves and arriving at a bloated, wasteful, and divisive bill cloaked as a ‘compromise.’”

The bill includes billions to increase COVID-19 vaccine distribution, financial support for businesses and local government, in addition to the direct payments.

Senator Tina Smith said some portions of the plan were fairly historic, including one measure predicted to cut child poverty in half by giving parents their dependent child tax credits as a monthly payment beginning this summer.

Another segment includes increasing financial support for tribal nations.
