BCA releases some names from Cass County officer involved shooting

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has named the two men who died Sunday in Backus.

According to a release, authorities responded to a 911 call on the 300 block of Pine Road in Backus shortly after 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

The caller reported that a neighbor had entered their house and was armed.

Deputies from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office as well as an officer from Pine River Police responded and encountered 57-year-old Keith Haux of Backus, walking down the road with a firearm.

Multiple commands were given to Haux and one Cass County deputy fired several shots.

Officers responded to the address of the 911 call and found 72-year-old Maynard Anderson, who had apparently been shot to death by Haux.

The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office reports that both Anderson and Haux died of multiple gunshot wounds.

The name of the deputy involved will be released following initial interviews, the BCA says, and two deputies remain on standard administrative leave.

The BCA has body camera and squad video footage which captured the incident.
