Bemidji man makes first court appearance for rape and assault charges

A 32-year-old Bemidji man is facing multiple criminal sexual conduct and assault charges.

Erik Lopez appeared in court Wednesday for a first appearance.

According to the criminal complaint, one of the female victims reported the sexual assault on Aug. 25, 2021.

She went to the Sanford Medical Center for an examination.

The victim, identified as E.S., said she went to her friend’s home, identified as L.D., to help take care of a child.

The initial victim said that Lopez raped and assaulted both women, but the second victim did not make a statement until Jan. 24.

L.D. said Lopez made her lie and threatened physical harm and to take her children away from her.

Lopez told investigators that the sexual acts were consensual.

E.S.’s medical records showed multiple abrasians and bruises all over her body, and indicated that E.S. cried throughout the visit and examination.

No bail or bond has been yet set, and it does not appear that Lopez is currently in custody.
