Economic development ideas discussed during work session

The Bemidji City Council broadly discussed ideas for putting more resources into local economic development.

Representatives from numerous development and economic groups were at the meeting, including Greater Bemidji’s Dave Hengel, once-retired but the current interim director of the Headwaters Regional Development Center Tim Flathers, and the new executive director for the Northwest Indian Community Development Center, Martin Jennings.

Jennings spoke candidly of some of the race relations issues his clients face, and on how economic development will need to modernize to fit the modern reality of the labor force.

No formal action was taken during tonight’s meeting, but more ideas will likely be discussed during the council retreat, scheduled for Nov. 29.
