Call to Artists for umbrella designs

May 1, 2022

Silk and Batik artist Mary Therese invites interested artists to submit umbrella designs reflecting the theme of “Unity” as part of a juried exhibition at Watermark Art Center that will open on August 19th, 2022 in the Kaul Gallery at the Watermark Art Center.

“The umbrella symbolizes the canopy of the heavens, shelter, and protection. It is often recognized in art as an emblem of power and dignity; the shape of a circle, a sacred symbol for life.

“With this exhibit, I hope to create an atmosphere of reverence, a place where people can experience the space under the Umbrellas to reflect on the images that honor and celebrate racial diversity while creating conversations and connections between peoples.”  – Mary Therese

Selected artists will be provided with fabric paint, and a 62” (arch) – 8 panel white nylon umbrella to create their artwork for the August show. Design can be continuous or as separate panels.

The Call is open through May 1, 2022. The submission application and umbrella template are available online at WatermarkArtCenter.org. Watermark galleries are free and open to the public Monday – Saturday from 10 to 5 pm and are located at 505 Bemidji Avenue N. in Bemidji, Minnesota, 218-444-7570. Masks are optional for exhibit visitors.
