Federal jury finds Red Lake man guilty of rape

A Red Lake man was found guilty of rape by a federal jury.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office says 38-year-old Descart Begay, Jr., was convicted last Friday on two counts of aggravated sexual abuse and two counts of sexual abuse.

The trial proved that on July 3, 2020, Begay knowingly raped and sexually assaulted the victim in her home until she was able to break free and escape.

Begay’s sentencing hearing has not yet been scheduled.

The Red Lake Police Department and the FBI Headwaters Safe Trails Task Force conducted the investigation.
