New pollinator garden to honor veterans and the people of Ukraine

Birds, Bees and Butterflies–Bemidji is designing a fundraiser in honor of the Ukrainian struggle for peace and freedom.

The project sponsors are hoping for the public’s help to plant a pollinator garden featuring sunflowers and other native wildflowers and grasses.

The garden will be across from the new Veterans Home on Anne Street.

Sunflowers are the Ukrainian national flower.

Financial or volunteer support would be appreciated as would community enthusiasm. The sunflower’s “cover crop” should reduce the need for herbicides as well as provide food for birds and pollinators.

“Once established, the pollinator garden will continue to honor our veterans for their service in protecting our own peace and freedom,” said the release.
