Bemidji High School All Clear After Monday Threat; New Visitor Restrictions At Bemidji and Bagley Sanford Locations; Fish House Removal Deadline Approaches

(Bemidji) Bemidji High School received information yesterday about a student allegedly possessing a weapon. Law enforcement was called and the high school was put into a brief “secure” mode while law enforcement investigated. As a precaution the high school was searched. No weapon was found and law enforcement stated that there was no indication that the report of the weapon was factual. The “secure” status was ended when the threat was determined invalid.

(Bemidji) The 2024 precinct caucuses are scheduled to be held this evening at 7:00 . They will take place at locations set by the parties.  If you wish to attend your party caucus and want to find your specific location, the Minnesota Secretary of State’s office manages a database called caucus finder, which you can access at caucusfinder.sos.state.mn.us.  Enter your address to find your caucus location.

(Bemidji)–Due to a recent rise in respiratory illnesses within the Bemidji area, Sanford Bemidji Medical Center and Sanford Bagley Medical Center are implementing visitor restrictions beginning today.  A donor recognition and ribbon cutting celebration for the Sanford Bemidji Heart and Vascular Center, originally set for this Thursday will also be postponed due to the rise in illness.

 While restrictions are in place, four visitors are allowed to visit per day, with no more than two visitors in a patients’s room at any one time.  Minor visitors must be accompanied by an adult, and one visitor will be able to spend the night as an emotional support  person.  Visiting hours are 7AM to 8PM.

>More Than A Dozen Departments Fight Massive Grain Elevator Fire

(Hawley, MN)    It took more than a dozen fire departments to battle a massive blaze at a grain elevator near Hawley.  The flames broke out Sunday night.  At least 17 departments responded, and the city sent a message to residents asking them to conserve water as crew continued fighting the fire, and school was closed yesterday.  No injuries were reported, and it’s unclear how the fire started.

(Minneapolis, MN)    The University of Minnesota is welcoming a new leader.  The Board of Regents selected Rebecca Cunningham yesterday as the university president.  The vote cleared the way for contract talks with the University of Michigan vice president for research and innovation.  Cunningham is expected to begin her new job on July 1.

>>Janitors And Security Guards At Target, MSP, Sports Venues Plan To Strike

(Minneapolis, MN)    Janitors and security guards who work at Target, Best Buy, Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and several large offices plan to go on strike.  The SEIU Local 26 union announced that there would be a walkout in one week.  Workers say they deserve a pay increase, better retirement benefits and working conditions.  Four bargaining sessions remain before Saturday’s deadline.  If no agreement is reached a strike will begin on Monday.

>>DNR Reminds Of Deadline For Removing Fish Houses

(Undated)  — The clock is ticking away for the removal of fish houses on Minnesota lakes. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is giving anglers in the southern two-thirds of the state until 11:59 p.m. on March 4th to remove fish houses. The deadline for the northern third of the state is March 18th. If houses aren’t removed by the deadlines, they could be confiscated, removed, or destroyed.

(Undated)    Minnesota is among the best states for women. That’s according to new research from the personal finance website Wallethub, which ranked Minnesota as the third best state for women. The rankings are based on several factors, including median earnings, education, and life expectancy. Massachusetts topped the list followed by the District of Columbia.
