Timber salvage projects at Chippewa National Forest

The Chippewa National Forest authorized two timber salvage projects in the Deer River Ranger District. The Mac Salvage area is about 20 miles north of Deer River near Jessie Lake, and the Ruby Salvage area is 25 miles north of Grand Rapids near Spider Lake.

The Forest Service identified two areas of concentrated blowdown from strong wind events last year.

Each project area is capped to harvest not more than 250 acres.

Crews will salvage the down, broken and leaning trees from the project areas while recovering the economic value of timber.

The two sites are covered with aspen, balsam fir, spruce, pine and mixed hardwoods.

The Forest Service says they presented information about the projects to the Leech Lake Division of Resource Management and to property owners adjacent to identified salvage areas.
