NASHWAUK– A toddler was killed in a pedestrian hit-and-run crash on Highway 65 yesterday in northeast Itasca county.

A teenage girl was walking southbound with a two-year-old boy in a stroller when a pickup truck headed in the same direction struck them, and then fled the scene.

The boy, Logan Kennert, was pronounced dead on the scene, and the 16-year-old, Alexia Caroll, was treated for non-fatal, yet significant injuries at a Duluth hospital.

The driver, 38-year-old Jake Michael Place of Nashwauk, was stopped in Nashwauk and booked into the Itasca County Jail on suspicion of criminal vehicular homicide, criminal vehicular operation and driving under the influence of a controlled substance.
