U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Denis McDonough listened at a local veterans town hall Friday.

McDonough told the group that a new mental health worker would be assigned to serve veterans in the area, including the tribal nations of White Earth, Leech Lake and Red Lake.

Many of the requests from local vets included additional support for mental health, a meeting space that would qualify for mileage reimbursements for PTSD support groups, and additional mental health workers.

After discussing issues in a Zoom call last March, the White Earth Tribal Veterans and Council invited McDonough to the area. White Earth Tribal Secretary-Treasurer Alan Roy highlighted the importance of Secretary McDonough’s visit.

McDonough also reportedly visited with Bemidji State University veterans and active military members on campus.
