New dashboard looks into violent deaths in Minnesota

The Minnesota Department of Health rolled out a new dashboard that looks at multiple levels of “violent deaths” across the state.

Violent deaths would include suicide, homicide, unintentional firearm, and law enforcement intervention pulled from the Minnesota Violent Death Reporting System.

This detailed look at violent deaths between 2015 to 2020 indicates that more than half of those who committed suicide had a current mental health plan and nearly half had a history of mental health treatment.

The dashboard also suggests some groups with the highest risk for suicide include American Indian males in their teens and 20s, and white men ages 34 to 64 in rural areas who have more access to guns and less access to mental health care.

The dashboard aims to be a tool to help guide the public through violence prevention.
