Electronic cigarette believed cause of downtown fire

Firefighters believe an electronic cigarette was the cause of an apartment fire downtown on St. Patrick’s Day.

Bemidji Fire Chief Justin Sherwood said the second-floor fire above Brigid’s Pub and Two Hearts dress boutique caused extensive damage to the home and its contents, with adjacent buildings and apartments sustaining smoke and water damage.

The FDA says the exact cause of vape fires and explosions are not clear but some evidence suggests that battery-related issues may be a cause.

No injuries were reported in the fire.
