Monday is an observed holiday on the calendar for Juneteenth.
This is an official federal holiday as of last year, and it recognizes when the last slaves were freed in Galveston, Texas, nearly two years after the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863.
Bemidji State University’s Campus Diversity Officer and Title IX Coordinator Steven D. Parker explained in a recent interview that Juneteenth is a freedom day, recognizing when the last enslaved humans were read President Lincoln’s proclamation.
Project for Change is hosting Bemidji’s 4th Annual Juneteenth Celebration this Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m.
RSVPs are required and can be done online.
