Public hearing on new ward boundaries tonight

The Bemidji City Council will hold the second reading and public hearing of an ordinance amending the city’s ward boundaries.

The local redistricting process began in earnest in February after redistricting at the state and congressional levels was completed.

The proposed new ward boundaries extend the existing Ward 1 further north, combining all Bemidji State University dormitories into the ward.

Current Ward 3 representative Ron Johnson would also be drawn out of his district and placed into Ward 1 from his home on Beltrami Court.

After the public hearing tonight, pending no additional changes, the council will hold a final reading and then publish the new ordinance.

After the city completes its redistricting process, the Beltrami County Board of Commissioners can establish its district boundaries.
