Redby man pleads guilty to murder of RLTPD officer

A Redby man pleaded guilty to the murder of a Red Lake Tribal Police Officer.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office says 29-year-old David Donnell, Jr., was the subject of an active warrant and welfare check on July 27.

Five tribal officers responded to the scene and found Donnell standing outside on the porch.

Donnell went inside the home, and as soon as the officers breached the door, Donnell opened fire.

Officer Ryan Bialke was immediately struck by gunfire.

The release says Donnell fired at least 22 rounds at Officer Bialke and the four other officers.

Bialke died at the scene.

Donnell fled but was quickly apprehended at a nearby residence.

The maximum penalty Donnell faces is life in prison.

The sentencing date has not yet been announced.
